Twin Cities League Official Endorsement Slate "Voter Cheat Sheet"
Twin Cities, MN
November 7, 2006
IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM, YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP.
IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE, YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP.
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP.
WHO WE ARE... We are young people from the Twin Cities who are pissed off at politics as usualand want to have a say in the policies that govern
our lives. We have been pushed down, locked up, and shut out of the political system for far too long so we've decided to step up and put ourselves back in the picture.
WHAT WE BELIEVE......We want health care we can afford, good schools, reasonable college
tuition, a healthy earth and reproductive freedom. We are against the racist immigration, criminal justice policies and wealth distribution
policies of our current government. We want an end to the war in Iraq.
WE DID THE RESEARCH.... and here are the candidates that we think best reflect that values and needs of young people in the Twin Cities
2006TCLeague_GenElec_ESlate.pdf
US SENATOR
The word senate comes from the Latin word senex for "old man". As of 2006, each senator’s annual salary was $165,200 per year. Each state may have two senators, that each serve six year terms.
Who are you?
The US Senate is one of two parts of the US Congress. In order for legislation to pass it is necessary to have the approval of both parts. The Framers of the Constitution created a bicameral Congress out of a desire to have two houses to check each other. In general, senators are regarded as the more important part because there are fewer of them, they serve for longer terms, represent larger constituencies (except for House at-large districts, which comprise entire states), sit on more committees, and have more staffers.
AMY KLOBUCHAR DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Amy is good on most domestic issues—she wants to expand health care coverage, invest in alternative energy, and put brakes on the out-of-control deficit spending of the Bush administration. Amy is disappointing in her wishy-washy stance on the war in Iraq and immigration. That said, she's running against Mark Kennedy, who is basically evil.
US REPRESENTATIVE
Funky……
The number of allowed state representatives depends on each states population. Each member serves a two year term, but may be re-elected as many times as he/she wants to run. Annual salary is $165,200 per year.
Who are you?
The House of Representatives was developed to be a “house of the people” and is supposed to represent public opinion. The Constitution provides that the approval of both houses is necessary for the passage of legislation.
What do YOU do?
The House was granted its own exclusive powers: the power to initiate revenue bills, impeach officials, and elect the President in Electoral College deadlocks.
DISTRICT 2 (Apple Valley, Chaska, Faribault, Northfield, Red Wing) COLEEN ROWLEY
Endorsed Vote: Yes
She’s ethical and courageous- former FBI agent. Good on civil liberties, would take apart the parts of the Patriot Act that violate the Bill of Rights.
DISTRICT 3 (Maple Grove, Edina, Minnetonka) WENDY WILDE, DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Former talk show host, got fired because she was too liberal.
DISTRICT 4 (St. Paul) BETTY MCCOLLUM DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
She’s experienced and effective. She’s been doing a good job representing us, we feel confident in her leadership.
DISTRICT 5 (Minneapolis) KEITH ELLISON DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Keith is strongly against the war and would work to bring the troops home. As a state legislator he wrote the MN Dream Act to open up access to education for undocumented students. He’s phenomenal and we emphatically endorse his campaign! HELL YEAH WE ENDORSE KEITH!
DISTRICT 6 (St. Cloud, Blaine, Stillwater) PATTY WETTERLING, DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
She’s pro-choice and unlike her opponent, she doesn’t hate gay people. We appreciate her insistence on accountability in the Congressman Foley situation. Special note: her opponent, Michele Bachmann, is extremely scary- she’s running on divisive “wedge issues,” with murky positions on everything else.
STATEWIDE TRANSPORTATION AMMENDMENT
Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement
We can’t tell the long-term implications of this legislation therefore no endorsement has been made
Constitutional amendment: Dedicate sales tax on new and used vehicles to transportation; 60 percent for highways, 40 percent for transit. Currently, only about half of the money raised by the tax is used for transportation projects. To pass, more than half of the people voting in November must vote "yes." Leaving the question blank counts as a "no" vote. If passed, change would be phased in over several years.
MN GOVERNOR & LT GOVERNOR
GOVERNOR
Funky…… Governors have the power to pardon criminal sentences. In MN governors serve four year terms.
Who are you? The governor is the head of the state.
What do YOU do? The governor can veto state bills. If or when there is a sudden vacancy in one of the state's U.S. Senate seats, the governor appoints someone to fill the vacancy until a special election is held.
LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
Funky…… Annual salary in MN is $120,303 (2001), but can get up to $179,000 in some states.
Who are you? The lieutenant governor is the subordinate office to the governor—the second highest office in each state.
What do YOU do? If the governor is not able to carry out their duties due to illness or death the lieutenant governor takes the place of the governor.
If you want to vote your values, vote PETER HUTCHINSON / MAUREEN REED. If you want to make a politically strategic move, vote MIKE HATCH / JUDI DUTCHER.
Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement
If you want to vote your values, vote PETER HUTCHINSON / MAUREEN REED. This race is a tough one. However, we unanimously believe Peter Hutchinson is the most progressive candidate on the majority of the issues that affect us as young people and issues we value, therefore, we strongly support him. He is a national expert on running effective state governments and he would focus on reorganizing finances for health care and education.
If you want to make a politically strategic move, vote MIKE HATCH / JUDI DUTCHER. Mike Hatch is the DFL candidate and he is playing the middle of the road strategy right now, so we don’t know what he’s going to do if he gets elected.
Pawlenty is scary as hell and known to be one of the most conservative governors in the country, and we don’t want him re-elected. A vote for Hatch is probably the most effective anti-Pawlenty vote. THINK THIS ONE THROUGH FOR YOURSELF AND GO WITH YOUR GUT FEELING ON IT.
MN SECRETARY OF STATE
(not to be confused with the federal office)
Funky…… In New Jersey, the Secretary of State is in charge of enhancing and building awareness of ethnic diversity. Other duties include promoting volunteerism and literacy. In North Dakota, in the event of a tie in any election for the state legislature, it is the Secretary of State who tosses the coin to determine the winner.
Who are you? The secretary of state - is the third most powerful state position. Placed behind the Lt. Governor, if the other two offices in state power fall from their duties, the secretary of state becomes the governor.
What do YOU do? Responsibilities lie in how elections are conducted: the enforcement of qualifying rules, oversight of finance regulation, and establishment of actual election-day procedures.
MARK RITCHIE, DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Mark understands that the purpose of the Secretary of State’s office is to ensure the right of every citizen to vote. He challenged the incumbent Secretary of State’s efforts to limit voting rights. He is committed to maintaining college students’ access to voting.
MN STATE AUDITOR
Funky….. State auditors serve four-year terms.
Has oversight responsibility for police and volunteer fire relief association pension funds, housing and redevelopment authorities, school districts, and all other units of local government.
Who are you? The state auditor is a constitutional office which serves as a watchdog for Minnesota taxpayers by helping to ensure financial integrity, accountability, and cost-effectiveness of Minnesota's local governmental entities.
What do YOU do? Watch over and keep financial track of organizations and government groups that use federal money.
Rebecca Otto DFL
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Rebecca has already started doing the job that she's running for and she uncovered millions of dollars of accounting errors in reports written by the current state auditor. She would use her role as auditor to ensure integrity in the finances of state and local government. However, we are concerned about her support of the amendment to ban gay marriage and we would like her to clarify her position on GLBT rights.
MN ATTORNEY GENERAL
Funky…… It is important that this office understands young people because the attorney general can get you in jail!!
Who are you? The Attorney General is the chief legal officer for the State of Minnesota. The Office represents and provides legal advice to over 100 state agencies, boards and commissions.
What do YOU do? The Office represents the state in state and federal court, as well as in administrative adjudication and rulemaking hearings. The Office handles felony criminal appeals, advises local prosecutors in the conduct of criminal trials and handles cases at the request of local prosecutors.
NA
Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement
LORI SWANSON is the DFL candidate. She’s good in terms of her philosophy of being the people’s lawyer and holding corporations accountable but she would support the death penalty if errors could be totally removed from the system. Because the death penalty is unjust in practice and theory, we do not support the death penalty under any circumstances.
MN STATE SENATE
Like federal legislation, state legislation is decided by the state senate and the state house. Currently, there are 7,382 state legislators in the United States. They prepare and analyze legislation, to review and amend submitted budgets, and to help solve constituent's problems with state government.

MN STATE HOUSE
Like federal legislation, state legislation is decided by the state senate and the state house. Currently, there are 7,382 state legislators in the United States.
