San Bernardino Pissed Off Voter Guide 2006

San Bernardino, CA

November 7, 2006

San Bernardino is one of the state's fastest growing cities and is a hot zone for many important issues -- immigrant rights are one of them. There are 2 really important candidate races in San Bernardino: the School Board Race and the City Council Race.

The School Board Race is being hijacked by right-wing, racist conservative forces pushing an anti-immigrant agenda. And the City Council is evenly split between conservative and progressive members so the stakes are high! Voting in San Bernardino on November 7th? Here’s all you need to know…

City Council, 3rd Ward

The Common Council is an elected body with legislative powers to enact ordinances, resolutions, policies, and enforcement, and funding actions to enhance the social and economic well being of the City and its citizens. Residents within their respective wards elect the seven members of Council to four-year terms. The seven Council members serve at various times on a number of sub-committees including Personnel Committee, Ways & Means, and Legislative Review.

Gwen Terry

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Gwen is a longtime community activist running on a platform of anti-violence, local job development, and increasing programs for the city’s youth. Gwen has a history of standing up for her community and fighting for her neighbors. She’s committed to creating more jobs and recreation opportunities for young people across San Bernardino, addressing the root causes of violence in our communities, and engaging young people in important decisions that affect their lives. Terry’s election is critical to maintaining a progressive majority. Terry is the candidate for us!

City School Board

The Board provides direction for operating the District through actions taken at its meetings. They develop the policies by which the educational programs and other business of the District are carried out. Proposed policies require two public readings prior to final adoption to allow for citizen comment.

Dr. Elsa Valdez

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Elsa Valdez is a strong, committed advocate for quality and equal education for ALL students. She has been an active school board member for 9 years. Elsa is a professor of Sociology at CSU San Bernardino and is committed to protecting education and the rights of students by helping more young people of color from San Bernardino go to college. She will continue to support community-based homework centers and other programs that help encourage San Bernardino students to attend college after high school. Go Coyotes!

Antonio Dupre

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Antonio Dupre has been a member of the school board for 9 years and is committed to improving our school system. He has supported homework centers, adult and youth education, after-school programs, and helped to push Arts Education as an essential part of basic education for all students. Dupre is committed to ensuring that the district not only provides a quality education for our youth, but that the community provides meaningful jobs for young people whether or not they choose to go to college. We believe that all students should have access to a quality higher education, and Dupre is heading in the right direction.

Teresa Para

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Teresa Parra is also an advocate for quality education for all students, dedicated to teaching to the student and not to the standardized tests. She believes that students come first and wants to provide teachers with the proper resources to teach to students’ needs. Teresa wants to focus on decreasing dropout rates; increasing programs for English language learners and Special Education students, and providing challenging academic programs for high-achieving students.

Lynda Savage

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Lynda Savage has served as Vice President and President of the Board, is a former teacher in the District whose interests are a strong reading and writing curriculum, fine arts, and programs to increase parental involvement in education. In the past, Savage has been supported and endorsed by the Republican Party which makes us not want to support her, but they’re not endorsing her anymore, ‘cause she’s stood in support of children and families who don’t have citizenship. This makes us feel better about endorsing her.
