Election Guide for Far North Chitown

Chicago, IL

February 5, 2008

If you live in Rogers Park, Edgewater, Andersonville, and Uptown this guide will have endorsements for all of the races you have to vote on. For other parts of Chicago and Cook County there will be some of your races but the list won't be comprehensive.
This guide is for people who are interested in a progressive and independent roster of elected officials. I am primarily concerned with local races because people are often less informed about them, but are greatly affected by the outcomes.
The people who get my endorsement are not machine politicians, bring relevant experience to the office and who are diverse. I also appreciate underdogs working for change. I do the best I can with those values in mind. Good luck as we move toward a more bottom up people's government this year. Yes We Can.

Below is a one page version of this guide in PDF format that you can print and take with you to the polls.

Delegates to the Nominating Convention

Delegates are the ones that actually vote for your Presidential Candidate at the Convention, so you must also vote for the delegates for your Presidential choice. Voting for President and skipping the delegates is like not voting for President at all. How many you are allowed to choose varies by Congressional District, read the instructions and don't forget to vote for an Alternate too.

Depends on Presidential Choice

Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement

Make sure to vote for all that apply.

Illinois State Senate, district #7

One of your 2 Reps to the State Legislature, you have one senator and one representative. In many districts there is no challenger to the incumbent.

#36 Suzanne Elder

Endorsed Vote: Yes

A grassroots candidate who learned about state politics the hard way when she tried to get a law passed helping children with diabetes. She is running on ending pay to play politics which dominates IL politics today. She is heavily endorsed!

Heather Steans

Endorsed Vote: No

A millionaire who failed to be given this office because the previous state senator couldn't build enough of coalition to have her appointed to the position. I do not endorse this type of back room dealing. Let the people decide.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioners

9 Board members make decisions affecting the water quality and sewage treatment of most of Cook County. This is an important position for people concerned about our water quality and environment.
You can vote for 3 people.

# 45 Mariyana Spropoulos

Endorsed Vote: Yes

She would bring more community conservation techniques and public education to the Board and is endorsed by the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters.

Currently sits on the Board as the Vice-Chair and has helped the MWRD not waste money.

#55 Derrick David Stinson

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Currently sits on the Board and worked for many years as an employee at the MWRD. He would be aware of how policies affect employees of the MWRD.

Cook County Recorder of Deeds

Is in charge of creating, storing and making available public records of things to do with property and real estate.

#64 Ed H. Smith

Endorsed Vote: Yes

The office of Recorder of Deeds needs reform and modernization. Ed Smith has said he will start by modernizing the office which still uses paper records for everything which makes it difficult to analyze the information in a useful way.

Cook County State Attorney

A very important office. This position decides what are the procedures for state prosecutors and what are the priorities in charging crimes in Cook County. The current Mayor Daley started his career in politics in this office.

#59 Larry Suffredin

Endorsed Vote: Yes

Larry Suffredin has a real passion to reform County Government. Larry would make not only fighting street crime a priority but is the only one focusing on political and white collar crime as something the States Attorney needs to so something about.
