St. Louis League's Missouri Voter Guide
St. Louis, MO
November 4, 2008
Love and respect to all our brothers and sisters in the struggle. Here's all the news you can use for the big date, Nov. 4th, '08.
President of the United States
Barack Obama
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Governor of Missouri
Jay Nixson
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Jay has been Missouri's attorney general since 1992 and is now running for governor. He is running on the following platforms that we totally dig: expanding the A+ Schools program to include free tuition at 4 year state colleges, ensuring that all Missourians have health care coverage, enthusiastically supporting development of clean energy as well as being a pro-choice candidate.
Prop A: Schools First Elementary and Secondary Education Funding Initiative
Endorsed Vote: No
Prop A increases taxation of state casinos to increase education funding. While it sounds good on paper, most of that money will not be going to schools and many schools will not receive any funding at all. It would also eliminate the $500 loss limit for state casinos, which seems like a predatory measure in itself.
Plus, basing the amount of cash that our schools will receive by how many people lose at baccarat? LAME.
It just smells fishy.
Prop B: Missouri Relating to Home Care
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Prop B expands the home care workforce to provide care for the elderly. This would ensure that those who are disabled are given better care and provide home care assistants with better pay.
Duh.
Prop C: Clean Energy Initiative
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Prop C is an initiative that essentially is mandating utilities to purchase energy from renewable sources. This prop would also mandate that energy costs do not increase by more than one percent annually.
Clean energy? No higher costs? Sign us up.
In St. Louis County - Prop M
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Prop M approves a half-cent tax increase to up funding for Metrolink. This would reduce congestion on the highways and make for an easier work commute. Also - less cars, less carbon dioxide, less harm to the environment... We think you see what we're getting at here. A half-cent is practically priceless when it ensures convenient, safe and efficient public transportation for all St. Louis county residents.
