Viva 505-'Burque Pissed-Off Voters-Prez Caucus 2008

Albuquerque, NM

February 5, 2008

Hey 505’ers, Que pasa? This is Marisol with Viva 505.

So, I got together with some “Pissed-Off Voters” recently, and we spent a little time researching the people seeking the Democratic party’s nomination for this year’s “Presidential Preference Caucus” (say that three times fast). It’s happening less than a week from now tomorrow, on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Polls for this election are open from 12pm (noon) til 7pm, and in order to vote in this caucus, you’d have to be a registered democrat.

So what’s the deal this caucus? What does it have to do with all of us in the Green Chile State?

Well, we know that our “little state” (in population, not land mass) is blowing up, and becoming a “unique little Hollywood of it own.” But deep down, no matter which stars come and go, WE are the folks who have a real stake in OUR community. We go to school here, we work here, we raise our kids here.

Unfortunately, people with sketchy agendas are (still) running OUR country, and it’s time for us to say, “Enough is enough.” Politics CAN be about doing right by people, and not about power or greed. Because (like it our not) politicians (both locally and nationally) are empowered by voters (and “non-voters”) like us, to change things in our state, city and community—for better or worse (in recession and in windfall, til the next election might they part).

So it’s up to us to elect (and in this particular case, nominate) folks who are going to represent us ordinary people, rather than be a corporate minion, a lobbyist lackey, or your all-around village idiot—running around getting OUR country into even more messes at home and abroad.

With that in mind, we put together a voter guide with general information about the candidates appearing on the ballot, whether or not they’re still seeking the nomination, and a little something about why they rock. We tried to figure out what the candidates are all about, and how honest and forthcoming they’ve been with voters (in terms of the information their campaigns are putting out there), and at the end of the day, we all had our own take on who would be the best person for the job.

But we did, however, all agree that from where we’re sitting (i.e. “the cheap seats”), ANY one of them would be a step up from what we’ve got right now (and a sizeable chunk of the world seems to agree).

We love our 505. Yeah, you read that right. We love you ‘Burque—and we’re not ashamed to admit it!

Use our guide. Love it. Print out copies and wallpaper your kitchen. Whatever dude. It’s all good.

¡Que Viva el 505!

Democratic Presidential Candidate

Barack Obama

Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement

Status: “In it to win it” (i.e. on the ballot and seeking the nomination)

This dude gets a “Gold Star” for his compassionate ability to inspire and unite people from such diverse backgrounds. We like that he opposed the Iraq war from the beginning, the fact that he was a community organizer back in the day, and his work on ethics reform was pretty sweet. There are many more reasons to like this guy, and even more reasons to vote for him.

Hillary Clinton

Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement

Status: “In it to win it”

This lady gets a “Gold Star” for her knowledge of policy and ability to translate it into legislative action. We like that she’s down with reforming our election system, the fact that she ran a legal aid clinic for the poor, and her work to strengthen equal pay laws and end gender pay disparities was pretty cool. Like her or not, this lady has some great ideas to move our country forward.
